Where are the white students in SF?

The unsurprising answer: in private schools. Gentrification not only drives up the cost of housing and means more cars on city streets, it leads to white-flight from public schools.

Rob, why does gentrification lead to white-flight from public schools? I thought gentrification was the invasion of wealthier whites into the inner cities?

I can see how, once wealthier white people arrive, they *avoid* going to public schools, but to say they are leaving them *because of gentrification* is confusing me a bit.

If you read the story, you would learn that the white gentry have more money to afford private schools.

This has all happened before, around 1970 when school busing was instigated. Even non-catholics began sending their kids to Catholic schools especially those in their neighborhoods.

The history is kind of muddled but St. James on Fair Oaks (conveniently between Noe Valley and the Mission) was all boys, then became boys and girls then became Adda Clevenger. When the Macdonald's went in at Mission/24 it became the hangout for these SF kids.

Yes, but if the white gentry move into the city and don't select a public school, that doesn't remove a child from the public school, thus doesn't account for a reduction in white students.

My experience has been that the newcomers are trying the public schools, but the old school SF white are going to the catholic schools - your old school NIMBY SF friends are all about religion, the newcomers are the agnostics and atheists and want nothing to do with the pedophile priests near their kids.
